Carlos I. Arguello, PhD

Born in Mexico, Dr. Carlos I. Arguello was trained in Developmental Biology at Alberta University, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and later at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Wood Hole, Massachusetts. He later joined the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Central University of Venezuela, Caracas, Venezuela. He returned to his Alma Mater, the Polytechnic National Institute in Mexico City, as full time Professor at the Department of Experimental Pathology, Center of Investigations & Superior Studies, IPN, Mexico, DF. Regrettably, he died in the prime of his career in 1997. Despite his short life, Dr. Carlos Arguello left an indelible impression in those who knew him. His scientific work, radiant personality and candor are celebrated and honored with our work. (some of his published scientific work is listed below).

"Carlos was always the calm in the middle of the storm, with so many virtues that are truly difficult to find in one single human being: jovial, tolerant, humble, knowledgeable and intelligent. He left us almost without making a noise, always trying to avoid worrying those who loved him about his true condition. We imagine your great pain and sorrow and that of your children. However, it may comfort you to know that beyond the Mexican borders, there are so many people who are crying for his death and will miss him."

In a letter directed to Dr. Carlos Arguello's wife,

Dr. Carlos Arguello was a pioneer in the study of the embryonic development of the heart and the vascular system. His work was focused on understanding the sequence of events that were taking place in certain regions of the developing heart with respect to their morphological, electrophysiological, cellular and biochemical interactions. Most of his early work involved the morphologic characterization and function of cellular matrix interactions in the growing embryo, as well as the study of cellular and molecular events involved in cell differentiation. Another important area of his career in later years was the study of parasite infections common in Mexico and Latin America and how the human body reacts to them.
